WHO WE ARE

img1.jpg (12848 bytes)Phoenix Athletics' roots in Canadian track & field stretch back to the 1960s. Since it began, literally thousands of athletes have trained and competed in association with the track club. The track club has traditionally been composed of numerous training groups located in various areas in the Greater Toronto Area, which operate under the tutelage of club coaches. Expertise of the coaches is shared amongst the groups and all groups come together in fielding club teams for important competitions including Provincial and Canadian National Championships. Today, the groups train out of locations located primarily in Scarborough. Phoenix coaches work with athletes in most school environments including university, high school and pre-high school programs. Also, Phoenix coaches work co-operatively with school coaches to ensure athletes programs optimize both individual and team performance. As a non-profit sporting club, Phoenix coaches are not paid but, instead, dedicate their personal time to work with club athletes as volunteers. Although the track club does ask member athletes to pay a yearly club fee, the fees are reasonable.

Through the years, Phoenix has produced and supported many national champions, national record-holders and world-class athletes including no less than 38 Olympians who have competed in 9 Olympiads. Mark McKoy, Donovan Bailey, Charmaine Crooks, Molly Killingbeck, Katie Anderson, Anthony Sharpe, Richard Rock, Bruce Simpson are just some of the names you will find on Phoenix Athletics' list of Olympians. Many of our athletes have made dozens of Canadian National Teams, too many to name here. With the clubs expert assistance, athletes have achieved their goals for over thirty years. Whether it is producing personal bests or medal winning performances, making a team, securing an athletic scholarship or just having fun with athletics, our club has a wealth of experience.

Phoenix Athletics has a history of club excellence. Through the years the track club has been ranked at the top track club rankings in Canada. Through the 1990s in particular, Phoenix was ranked number one amongst all Canadian track & field clubs three times. The Phoenix Athletics? track & field club remains committed to the support of senior athletes, however in the past few years the club has increased its focus on junior athlete development, that is, athletes younger than 19 years of age.

Phoenix runs training sessions on a 12-month per year basis geared to indoor and outdoor track & field seasons, as well as, cross-country. To increase local competitive opportunities for athletes, Phoenix hosts several indoor track and field meets each year.
